American speaker manufacturer Anthony Gallo may be relatively unknown on this side of the pond, but it is making a big splash with its first UK release. The unique Nucleus Micro system looks sensational. The spherical satellites come in eight different colours and measure a meagre 4 inches. They're certainly heavy though, and despite using a 3" full range driver, can deliver 100w of power. There are four mounting options, including placement on gloriously curvy stands or bookshelf positioning. Circular rubber soles are provided partly to prevent the speakers from moving, but also to reduce vibration. Around the back these funky orbs even boast banana plug speaker terminals.
The MPS 150 powered sub features a downward-firing 10in driver and has a frequency response of 40Hz to 160Hz. It delivers 150W continuous RMS from the separate amplifier module. This can sit on top of the sub or with the rest of your AV equipment. The satellites have a frequency response of 80Hz to 18KHz. It is recommended to use the system's amplification rather than connecting to an external amp. The sub is designed to take the load off the satellites with the crossover ranging from 40Hz to 100Hz.
For full-range speakers these small satellites pack an almighty punch. The soundstage is wide and inviting, while enough power is generated to fill a small to mid-sized room. Despite not having a dedicated centre channel, dialogue is clear. Bass is deep but doesn't drown out the satellites. The sub is relied upon to provide lower midrange detail, but this is the case with most comparable packages. Fine performance and classy looks: a winning combination.
